United to their credit tried to change the IE flight to the code share version, but they couldn't. Apparently, this is a new thing they've noticed with ticket inventory, sometimes the same flight will appear as a code-share in one itinery but non-code-share in another.

I guess one more thing to look out for when you buy tickets now.
Unfirtunately, it sounds like the agent you spoke with was misinformed.
