You might want to see if you can use those AMEX points via UA's Star Aliance to make something work. Transfer to ANA or some such. The UA board would know.

You can use the AMEX points directly to buy the flight, but that rate is rarely a good deal.

Just forget the DL SMs on this, they will not expire so find some use for them later.
