Sounds like a good plan. Then you could move to a nonstop and probably get to SAN earlier, while collecting some compensation.
Yes there are pluses, but even with nonstop it still forces the same LAXSAN flt. Guess I should have snagged the "stink-shield" seat on the CRJS when it showed open the other day. Just never believed the advice to always select a seat to avoid getting bumped but I guess that applies in this case.
