So by your logic it is perfectly ok for someone to book a ticket, wait by GA until upgrades are being processed, see if your upgrade will be processed and if it is: do nothing and if not: lie to GA and say "wait I will pay" to delay upgrade processing and call and apply alternate upgrade instrument instead?
It doesn't matter when the person does it as long as there is availability
The person didn't lie, the person did pay for the higher cabin using an SWU. That this is not a method that the GA had considered is irrelevent
You missed out on a free upgrade due to AA managing to get something of value for it; that's life.
