It all seems to depend on the agent in front of you.

I've had 1 1K agent tell me that I'd have to wait 3 days for the next flight with award space. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

5 minutes later, a RCC agent could protect my party of 4 on the next flight out (the next day) in Business Class (our class of service)

Clearly YMMV.
