My preference is to accumulate *most* of my flying miles into United. But there are always times a flight here or there doesn't fit that mold. Regional jets vs 737s, levels of service, maybe a certain partner is different. Like right now I read Alaska has a bonus of double miles for all flights flown on Emirates.
Then also Alaska has redemptions on some of those partners. One way on Cathay with a stop in HKG has been written about a lot. Ability to use rewards on Emirates I believe is also still available through Alaska.
So there are just sometimes where if you're flying a lot it's good to be flexible, in my opinion.
