Did this a few times, never an issue. Put the name in as second guest, add in comment that xxx will arrive first.
You could also forward your relatives the reservations with a comment: Here is the reservation. Please check in if you arrive before me (in case of a paid reservation) or some other comment and let them take the printout.
But emailing or calling should also work. It seems the hotels don't generate problems in this situation.
