It just is the way it is. And often, no, the employee would not be liable, and most people wouldn't in their right mind sue the employee unless also suing the employer. It's bizarre to me that someone would think about making it you vs. the employee, and I know of no industry where that is the custom.
Not sure I agree with that unless there's some weird airline exemption from the normal rules of tort law. The employee is always liable for his or her own wrongful conduct, regardless whether the employer is also on the hook.
Though you might just sue the employer under respondeat superior.
