I used to not pay much attention and then I was connecting on an AA flight with a BA codeshare #. AA said they would gladly put me on an earlier plane but because it was a BA # I would have to get BA to do it and BA wanted their $400.

Unless there is a really compelling reason to do so I would stay away from codeshares and always book the airline that you are flying on.
