I had an AV-issued award ticket for UA+SK flights earlier this year, missed my flight on UA and UA rebooked me for the next day on UA+BA. [Earned miles for the BA flight.]

But I've had other situations last year where UA told me to go back to the ticket-issuing carrier.

The latter outcome seems more common in practice.
