Even one stay can make Gold "worth it". You will usually go from getting one of their ordinary rooms to an upgraded room. Maybe not any bigger, but better to be on the 4th floor than on the 1st floor with the window right on the parking lot next to the trash bins. Then add in free breakfast and free internet. Besides, why bother to get HH points if you aren't going to use them.
