I specifically book VX because of this reason...7 hrs to SFO is too costly to waste on a dark 752/3 and not confident at all with UA's wifi.

VX by far has the best in flight options and the wifi works consistently well for basic web surfing and emailing with little to no time-outs compared to UA whenever I've done the BOS-SFO/LAX routes which is frequent.
