As an update, I sent in the dispute form (by fax, of all things) and was told it can take from 45-90 days to resolve and credit to a replacement card which has already been sent. The CSR said they may ask for proof of purchase (the receipt, which I still have) later on. They also said there's $0 liability fraud protection as long as I follow the proper notification and dispute channels, which I have.
Bottom line, my funds are tied up for a couple of months, but no losses. Although I'll breathe easier once I cash out the replacement card. Still not sure where the breach occurred (Evolve, issuer, Albertsons).
This is one of the reasons I keep every receipt and card even if they're liquidated.
I too had to file a stolen/lost report last night for a card that I purchased a couple days ago. I couldn't unload it or check the balance so I had to speak to a CSR. And he informed me the card number was used a few times already and they had put a stop on it. I don't know how they had determined it was stolen even before I called in but at least they knew something wasn't right.
The CC number on USBank GC can be easily guessed. Actually you don't even have to guess what they are since they're numbered sequentially. Anyone can grab a card from a store and just add "#" to the last digit and they have the card number(s) without tempering any card. I wish they used random numbers like Metabank or Incomm's GCs.
