i've flown p.s. ex-JFK my last 2 times to hawaii because prices were lower than EWR (EWR is arguably more convenient from my CT home because of amtrak). just to broaden the sample size a little, i did a quick search for both 6 day JFK-HNL and EWR-HNL trips in june (also did NRT). the prices are essentially identical.
i don't disagree that p.s. is designed (or at least marketed) for O/D, but i've never really noticed a significant JFK p.s. premium
when connecting further west that would discourage non-O/D traffic. sure, the p.s. O/D figure is higher than EWR TCONs, but i would think that's more of a function of JFK not being a UA hub - just like boston.
