National Crisis Averted: Stanley Cup Lost, Then Found at YYZ

http://www.canada.com/news/story.asp...E-3783CC4EC147

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">The first-ever visit of the Stanley Cup to Slovakia was delayed when the Austrian Airlines regular flight from Vienna to Kosice landed in the Eastern Slovakian city Thursday afternoon with two NHL guards but no Cup.

After a frantic search, the Cup was found at Toronto's Pearson International Airport: it never left the ground.

Now, the Cup was in New Glasgow, NS on July 29th for a parade in honour of New Jersey Devils defenceman Colin White, so I assume it was making a connection from YHZ at YYZ when things went awry.

Once the cup was located, it was placed on the next available YYZ-VIE flight, thus ending the longest time the Cup has stayed in Toronto since 1967 (I can't take credit for that joke... it appeared on another website.)

Personal Cup Anecdote: I once was working a flight to Toronto in Halifax when the Cup was being loaded. It travels in a big black case like you see skate sharpeners in. Anyway, someone went up to the terminal and found the Cup's "escort", who came down to the ramp (this was pre 9/11), unlocked the Cup's case, and let all of us hoist it and pass it around right on the tarmac. Someone went and bought a disposable camera in the terminal so I have a picture of myself with the Stanley Cup next to an A320's main gear. The pilots, the airport RCMP, and about 50 AC guys all came out to see it... it was a really nice moment.
