I guess theres always something you can learn. We didn't know that you couldn't ask for miles to be credited to another account, now we are wiser!

Yes, it was a voluntary change after! the compensation was offered. I don't think anyone would want to change from a direct to non-direct flight if no compensation was offered at all?!
