Incidentally a one-way train ticket from Amstel to Duesseldorf downtown only takes 2h 16 (exactly the same as driving according to Google Maps) and costs €29. There may be multiple reasons why you would want/need a car for that journey but cost or time wouldn't be one.

If travelling alone, without too much stuff, and with a reasonable amount of luggage I'd use public transportation for this trip.
