It was a disaster.
I had changed to an earlier departure and taken CX884, hoping to standby onto an earlier flight out of LAX. exHKG departure delayed ~2.5hrs courtesy wx induced flow control (well handled by the crew, with a proper drink run and IFE turned on). Landed ~1.5hrs late and made the mistake of not asking a CX agent at the gate for assistance. Ran to the immigration hall only to see the longest immigration queues i've ever seen. Stuck between holding my spot and seeking out a CX agent for help (technically, I did not have a tight connection, as my booked flight was for much later..)
Took ~2hrs to clear immigration and missed the ideal flight that i wanted to standby on (free on AA with OWE status) - got onto a later flight/reroute, but fairly certain that the end result/arrival into ROC would have been much better if I hadnt had to wait those 2 hrs.

Not on this particular trip, but i've done 4 sector tag throughs without any issue. Yes, the bag had multiple tags on - but they showed up just fine the three times i've had to do this - across airlines/alliances.

1) I believe 3 hours would be enough even for non-US citizens, is there anything I should be aware of?
2) At HNL, I would ask the counter to send our baggage all the way to HKG. However, do I need to pick them up at LAX?
3) What will be the process in LAX? I assume it will be Landing->Exit terminal->Security Check in Int'l terminal->Take off. Is there anything that I miss?
4) None of our party has any OW status but I am in green status in MP. Would this be any helpful to have this status? I am hoping to make this as smooth as it could be for my parents.
1) No issues. Bags will go all the way through, and the US has no outbound immigration. TSA at LAX can be a pain, but i'd think that you'll be fine. Just ask the CX guys to help you if youre running late (since you have to go by the CX counters anyway, when going from AA's terminal to TBIT).
Worst case (I doubt) you'll miss your CX flight, but AA will take care of you even on separate tickets (AA policy for sure..not sure if thats Oneworld policy).
2) Nope- bags go all the way through. Outbound from the US is all easy peasy - just check that the AAgent taags the bags properly to yoru final destination. Politely ask for a supervisor's help if you
3) Correct - AA terminal and TBIT are a 2 min walk apart. I would stop by at the AA flagship lounge before exiting the AA terminal, time/entry rules permitting
4)Doubt MPC Green status helps with anything, but if you're on seaparte tickets for AA and CX, i would call both and cross reference to the other's flights (So that CX knows that you are coming on AA162).

I just wish that the above be a pan-oneworld policy..
