An extra connection is an extra opportunity for a misconnect. And I will always avoid connecting through ORD given the choice.
I would also keep calling until day of departure to see if seats open up on the Singapore flight from Houston through Moscow. If I wasn't 1K or better I would pay whatever change fees were necessary.
