I went last fall, and after a couple of inquiries with AA gave up any hope of booking tix to GPS using AA miles. For some reason, they could easily see and book flights on LAN (LA) coded flights but not LAN Ecuador (XL). The flights were pretty easy and cheap to get using LANPass kms though (readily available if you have SPG points to transfer or get the LAN credit card). I also noticed that you can buy km at the point of booking on LAN's website for less than the cash price of the ticket for this route.

Note: since last fall, the SPG transfer ratio to LANPass has gone down to 1:1.5 and LAN's prices have gone up a bit, but you should be able to get 2 tix for < 25k SPG points if you stick to less popular days in October. In November, the rates seem to double or triple.
