The 787 NRT and PVG flights out of LAX are really unreliable. Not uncommon for 2 or more of those flights having 8+ hour delays (typically maint. related though).

Most likely the reason as noted by sCO FAs that seem to loathe a reasonable layover that they have the layover minimized so much that any inbound delay means no slack in the system. One of the better reasons to give the pilots and FAs a 2 day layover is to make sure it doesn't create havoc on your entire system when your shooting for a C+ (80%) OT performance. that's simply going to perpetuate cascading delays throughout the global network and make an 8hr delay like the one noted the norm when combined with minimal (unrealistic) crew layovers (when you can't run an Airline focused on A type OT rates).
