Obscenely bad United software, they should be embarrassed to be so stupid.
Protocol that worked: Search one way at a time, "Mileage Plus Upgrade Award" checked, along with "Show 50 Flights". Use browser find to look for "BusinessFirst", to not be distracted by partner carriers or SFO-ORD upgraded followed by coach over ocean. Now attempt to buy using fares Y,B,M,E,U,H,Q,V,W. Be fully signed in with expert mode, notice that R capacity shows zero on flights where you just saw capacity. Redo search using "Multiple Destinations" rather than "Round Trip", narrowing down elusive leg until R capacity shows. Book, wait for purchase to confirm, upgrade using GPUs.
So why is R capacity so squirrelly? It is possible that it would be there after purchase, but if it didn't show during purchase, I would be afraid the same bug would keep it from showing after purchase. Switching to "Multiple Destinations" didn't raise the fare.
Again, is writing software really this hard? It has never been for me... One can only conclude they're doing this on purpose.
Thanks for the tip on using the number of flights to show as 50.^ I did not even notice this option is located in the bottom right corner of the screen, and it lets one search for many more flights and upgrade space.
