I have traveled many times with my wife who has no status who is on a separate confirmation (but same flights). Generally have not had a problem taking her with me into the premium lane. Only had one exception ever, at OAK once the premium lane checking person denied us. even though there were other instances at OAK where it worked fine for us.
OAK is the worst for this. But it does speed up that line. Other bad thing is that pre-check there is flooded with people who don't have any clue what they are doing.
