I was once waiting for an RJ flight from CLT to ORD on AA when the previous RJ flight was boarding. It turned out to be overweight and there was a long discussion over whether to unload the gate checked bags. It turned out that they didn't weigh enough so they unloaded several passengers instead. I would have been rather unhappy if my gate checked carry-on had been left behind. I don't know if this happens often.
