You need R>0 to upgrade using e-upgrade credits. Hence, if R=0 you´ll be waitlisted. There´s a reasonable chance your waitlisted upgrade will "silently" clear without R space showing up online, though of course it´s not guaranteed.
The exception being if you're on a North American Latitude flight pass, in which case you can request a complementary upgrade T-48 hours if J > 0, irrespective of R space.
