UA Flight #49 BOM-EWR: Cancelled on Thursday, April 10th
I was one of those affected by the cancellation of thur night flight. Mob scene. Extremely stressful. Many things went wrong in the hours that follows. 1) no public announcement that the flight was cancelled. We only found out cancellation because the captain came out of the jetway and announced the news without any microphone/speakers. So everyone was confused what happened? 2) more commotion for another 1/2 hr or so without any news. Everyone was on the phone trying to make other arrangements. For those seemed a little less savvy travelers, they just kept going up to the gate agent for more info which she didn't have. 3) finally someone came out and told everyone (again) without loud speakers that everyone needed to go thru immigration custom etc before they can go to the check in counter for the next flight. But since there was no public announcement, some pax didn't know that they had to go with the group. 4) we waited for seems like another 30 mins before the whole crowd was led to the immigration for out release. People started running down the hall like they were chased by zombies. But that didn't matter because immigration was not ready and everyone got queued up again and more waiting. Eventually, all three hundred people had to line up for just 3 immigration officers for clearance. 5) going back to the departure hall was no easy task. We actually had to go outside the arrival hall (means back to hot and humid weather) and then take an elevator up to the departure hall). After that, you had to go thru the same process of showing your new tickets (paper or electronic) that you are booked for a new flight before the security will let you into the terminal. So for most people, that means you can't go to the UA desk for alternate arrangements. I fortunately was not one of those people because I made my arrangement on my phone. So not sure the fate of others who didn't. 6) finally I you were one of the lucky few who got rebooked to different flights, you had to pray that the other flights were not overbooked which happened to the VS flight via LHR. I originally got downgraded to prem Econ from upper class bc they oversold upper class (probably the fault of Amex travel and the likes when every one of us tried to rebook on the phone at the same time). Fortunately, somehow I got my upper class seat back at the gate.
All in all, not a great showing for both UA and the BOM logistics. I really hope those who didn't fly out last night were eventually flew out today or the next day or two.
