Check bag during layover in SYD?

I've got a multi-leg trip coming up, and it'll be my first time through SYD. It looks like there's no way to avoid checking a bag on this one, but I may be able to avoid having to haul it all over God's green (or red) earth.

I'll be coming in through SYD, staying a couple days, then flying back out. About a week later, I've got a 2:15 (4:25 - 6:40 PM) layover in SYD on my way from ASP to AKL. I won't need anything in the checked bag during this time. I was thinking about storing it in SYD the first time I'm there, and picking it back up on my way out.

So I guess I have two questions:

1. Does anyone have any idea if Qantas would allow me to check a bag on a flight I'm in the middle of a layover for? I would think that they would, but I'm not really familiar with their policies, and can imagine them having a problem if they figure out I'm already partway through my itinerary.

2. Is it even feasible to consider this time-wise? Like I said, I've got 2:15, on a Wednesday afternoon/evening. It looks like ASP > SYD flight will come in at terminal 3, and SYD > AKL would depart from terminal 1. The baggage storage place is in terminal 1 (international arrivals). I'm assuming this would mean I'd need to go through security again. I'm not sure how SYD works - I wouldn't have to go through customs too, would I?

This whole plan may be penny wise and pound foolish - I may be better off just hauling the thing around with me for a few more flights, and just not worrying about on my return through SYD. If that's the case, just let me know.
