It works both ways of course because Avios can be used on US now and I doubt that most US members would be rushing to pay BA's extortionate award charges in preference to the other options. If you look at aa.com, it's far harder to find premium cabin TATL redemptions on AA flights than it is for BA for that very reason although the overall picture is poor.
I agree that the influx of new potential BA award customers probably hasn't helped the situation but I don't think it's quite as clear cut as you suggest.
BUT it does mean trying to use a 241 Amex voucher that can only be used on BA and trying to match it to a NAmerican destination is virtually impossible to do at the mo..
