It's an easy walk to Avis/Hertz/National/Enterprise from Terminal A. I always walk it, even in the unlikely event that the Airtrain is running.
That's good to know. The one time I'm booked into EWR thus far, I'll be landing from MXP, and traveling with a boatload of luggage. So I might wind up taking the shuttle bus, if we clear customs in Terminal C.
