Honestly, this is just a ridiculous miss on AA and Citi's part. It's really pretty stunning. It's not rocket science to have assumed there is demand for a spouse membership.
It's quite simple, figure out the incremental fee to charge the spouse, verify that the person is indeed a spouse (AC already has a process for that), collect said fee, send them a new card with the same logo printed on the back as the primary card.
Just bizarre that they did not offer this solution when the card launched. Similar to the way they withheld Wifi (for quite awhile) from Amex card holders in the lounges, perhaps this is some bizarre strategy to still force some users to be standard, legacy membership holders.
