A Primer: Saving $$$ on Flights with "oneworld events" and Event Codes

Many of you are familiar with using discount codes (easily found with a few internet searches) on aa.com to get a discount of 5-10% for AA flight bookings. Well, you can use the same approach with oneworld event bookings, found at http://events.oneworld.com/Travel/Web/oneworldHome.

There are a few differences, however, between this site and aa.com:

  • The discounts can vary, not always returning exactly the 5% savings that we found on aa.com. Why? Well, rarely will this booking engine return the exact same flights you might find on aa.com, so it's hard to find apple-to-apple comparisons. But, even when the itineraries were identical, I saw a range of savings of about 3-7%. This, I cannot explain.

  • Like aa.com, the discount rate, ostensibly 5%, is applied to the base fare. And, the base fare on a TATL booking can be as low as $100 these days, so don't expect to save hundreds of dollars on a $2000 total fare. I did see a max saving of $240+, but also found a $12 higher fare than aa.com on one test. YMMV.

  • The travel window is much more generous than what we saw on aa.com, usually a three-week window, but going up to a four-month window for some destinations, such as ATH.

  • The event site often returned "better" itineraries than aa.com. For example, several KUL test-bookings returned a bunch of all-AA flights (avoiding non-mileage-earning CX flights) whereas I had to use a crowbar on aa.com to get the same flights -- if I could get them at all on certain travel days.

MODERATOR NOTE: These event codes are intended for those who are attending these events alone. Using codes listed if you are not attending an event exposes you to the ministrations of American Airlines Corporate Fraud department, which could include flight cancellation, loss of account and miles, requirement to purchase full walk-up fares, etc.

AA has become quite concerned about fraudulent activity (using these codes if you are not attending the event given or otherwise entitled to use these codes is fraudulent booking). In more or less recent times, AA has required deletion of the original discount code thread, as the codes were being used by people who were not entitled to use the codes; required closure and review of The Coupon Connection; stepped up efforts at intercepting fraudulent activity, resulting in FT members and others being "fined" miles to being banned from holding an AAdvantage account, including forfeiture of all accumulated miles and AAdvantage status.

We are modifying this thread to delete all codes. If you qualify for any oneworld event discounts, feel free to use the thread link above and use them (we can not control how you acquire those, but must post the caveat below about using them.) But as moderators, we will not put Flyertalk and its members at risk, and must adhere to the Flyertalk Rules. Note: this is not an arguable issue.

FlyerTalk Rule 15. Deceptive, Dishonest, Illegal or Fraudulent Posting
