I do not recommend walking. The route goes around the backside of the airport, which is an industrial zone. I don't think there are sidewalks or safe shoulders to walk on.
Some people like to get around via the VTA Airport Flyer (bus) Route #10. It's free and takes you to the Santa Clara Caltrain station. But from there it's still an unpleasant walk. Moreover, you'll have to loop out of your way to get around railroad tracks which have no pedestrian crossing and traffic bridges where pedestrians are not permitted.
Which hotel will you be staying at? Maybe we can find you a decent burger that doesn't require such an adventure.

Thanks for the help, that was kind of what I figured re: walking. I really had my heart set on trying the In N Out. Not worth a $15 cab ride so I guess I'll just wait until the next time I am through LAX.
