For those that haven't read all the threads - Discover runs on the Union Pay system so will always work in China.
As for the hotel thing, the problem is when the hotel employees don't know.
Also, Discover cards used in China are treated like UnionPay cards, and no DCC at all.
My experience is that international chains with the level of or above Sheraton all know how to turn DCC off. Holidays Inns I've run into problems before, a new hotel, employees were not properly trained.
