I am very lucky with my cat. She comes from a shelter and I've had her a little more than a year. I travel often, with longest trips 2 weeks. I have my neighbor's kids come feed her and clean the litter box once a day. They typically stay for a little while and play with her. My mom and dad come every other day to check on her (they live close by and it gives them something to do). There are also bird feeders outside two windows and the cat has plenty of entertainment.

Not once - not ever - has she left a "present" for me. She is extremely clingy when I return, never standoffish.

I had someone once question why I would have a cat if I travel so much. I responded with my own question: do you think the cat would rather be in a cage at the shelter, or in a 3-bedroom house with views/sunlight and no restrictions?
