I think what the poster means is that if you're flying a EU flagged carrier, they are subject to EU rules for compensation in the event of trip interruptions. And the EU rules are the most stringent and consumer friendly that you can imagine.
I do not believe he was insinuating a different level of service - I think the ME carriers have absolutely wonderful service. It's just that if stuff should hit the fan, you're better protected if on a EU flagged carrier.
If I had to pick, I'd pick a ME carrier only because I like the food and IFE better (as you pointed out) and pray that everything goes well with the flight
