I'd add this. You mention Australia and South Africa in your post. Heve you actually checked award availability to these countries? In F and J, there's little or no availabilty for months ahead, though sometimes short notice availability does turn up. Disclaimer: I've been looking for AmEx 2-4-1 awards which require BA flights only.

There can be availabilty using Avios or AA miles on other airlines such as QF, QR or MH, so checking those could be an option.

Also, do AA offer transPacific awards to Australia? I've used UA redemptions to both Australia and New Zealand using UA miles. If AA do something similar (+/- QF), that could be another opportunity to explore.
When I was doing my check for the calcs above there was plenty of QF availability in F compared to almost zero on BA to Aus.
