If you redeem AA miles on BA flights you will have to pay the same surchages that you would with Avios. BA forced AA's hand on this a couple of years ago.

QF flights to SYD using AA 160000 & £289.15
BA flights to SYD using AA 160000 & £799.85 (The only redemption I could find were a combo 11/15 and 16/12) As a result the charge includes a surcharge for each sector. I think it will be less if you could find an award straight through to SYD. But with BA's oh so generous scheme there is no single flight availability between now and next March that I could find.

However for other airlines the savings stated above are pretty indicative.
