I know this has been discussed in other threads, but could not locate it. Apologies in advance. I have read this can be done but is not always straight forward.

We currently live in USA and when I fly back to NZ via LAX on a Air NZ ticket, I would like the status points to go to my AirNZ account and the actual miles to go to my United MP account.

How to do this? At check in? At the Air NZ lounge after check in? Are there some "magic words" I need to use to help the person behind the counter understand what to do? Any other tips or advice?
