And also, I'd like to keep it a secret. Booking with Avios seems to force me to enter his details (inc EC number) so it would show up in his app. Whereas with cash, I could just enter his name and then add the EC a few days before.
You don't need to enter EC number when booking. You can do it at any stage before flight (or not even bother since it wont attract Avios or TPs)
