Dollar coins will never succeed in the US unless they discontinue the dollar bill. The dollar bill is so ingrained in American society that people will never use the dollar coin unless they have no choice. And because the dollar bill is so ingrained in people's minds, getting rid of it would be such a huge mess that, frankly, it wouldn't be worth it. Any money spend on dollar coins by the US Mint is wasted. Dollar coins mainly benefit coin collectors.
