Were you given the option to put the itinerary on hold originally (I thought you couldn't do this for most codeshares)? If not, AA should have let you simply refund the original itinerary and rebook as it was within 24 hours.
Looking at the cheaper Qantas fares, if it was one of those , being non-refundable would have been very expensive way to make the change
