And this is the reason that AirNZ can claim that they are now offering more Airpoints dollars than before the change. However the average flyer who perhaps does three or four domestic return trips each year (and that's probably overstating it) would earn just a handful of $AP over the three years before they expire, not enough to use on even a grabaseat flight, so they will loose them. Net cost to Air NZ is absolutely zero.
