I wouldn't even try to get into the Louvre or any other large museum, it's too time consuming. A few weeks ago I was in Paris waiting in line for the Musee D'Orsay. You have to wait in a long line for a cursory security check outside the famous museums, a check that is clearly just there to provide employment for some guards. At noon, they closed the security check and let us all stand there for 15-20 minutes while they took a break, welcome to France!
You can buy "skip-line" tickets to the Louvre at the PHV concierge desk.
We managed to skip the long line at Musee D'Orsay by going to Musee Rodin first (which had no line) and buying a passport ticket that was was also good express entrance to Musee D'Orsay.
