I booked my parents an award in Y MAD-DFW-TPA, currently they have a 04:05 connection in DFW. An earlier flight to TPA has now opened up that would reduce the connection to 1:50.
They are not experienced travelers, no GE, one checked bag.
My feeling is that I should leave them on the longer connection, although they would probably prefer the shorter one if they can make it. The later flight that they are currently on has few seats left, so I think the chances of them being rebooked on that are slim.
Should I trust my instincts and leave them with the 4 hour connection?

I made the decision for myself (experienced traveler with GE) to book a later flight, and in hindsight I'm glad I did. When I got through ORD security, I checked the departure monitor and they were already boarding my original flight.
If I were making reservations for elderly relatives as you described I'd go with the 4 hour connection. With a 1:50 connection you are only one restroom stop away from missing the plane.
Why not buy Mom and Dad a couple of Admirals Club day passes so they have a couple of comfy chairs to sit in while they wait?
