You get all your Avios back if you cancel (other than within the last 24 hours). You get to keep the use of all your Avios if you change your booking.

"You get a little back" is distorting the reality, unless you think that your Avios are worth nothing (or next to nothing).

But, again, a long-haul award is not £600. It's £600 and a pile of Avios. Ditto for short-haul, which is more than £35 - so the change fee is not 100% unless you value the Avios at nothing.
