Patrick Freeman, the former developer for Auberge Resorts, was appointed president of Cisneros Real Estate in Miami…Freeman first met the principals when he was with Auberge and came to the Dominican Republic to help create a sustainable luxury development encompassing thousands of acres of coastline on the Bay of Samaná in the Dominican Republic called Tropicalia. What started out as a plan to build a small Auberge resort and a bigger residential component has been flipped with a Four Seasons now planned to open in 2016 as the anchor to the development with as many as 60 residential units.

The Four Seasons in the D.R. is 165 rooms and we are allowed to add up to 60 additional Four Seasons residences. I don't know if we will do all of them as we have a conservative plan for releasing that real estate over time but it is not a key component of whether the hotel is successful or not. We are not going to get caught in the trap of being forced to sell real estate to make ends meat on the hotel…In the DR, we have no intention of releasing unbranded real estate for at least five to seven years, if at all…For our Dominican Republic project, for example, we brought in Alan Kelso, who created the Four Seasons in Costa Rica, to manage our development process

At the same time, Freeman is poised to announce a very newsworthy hotel deal in an iconic Colorado ski town, and is talking with the likes of Four Seasons and Cheval Blanc to manage. Further afield, Freeman wants to do additional hotel deals in Latin America, more specifically Brazil and Venezuela.

We have talked to people financing the Baha Mar deal about putting together a package of five Four Seasons properties in South America as an individual deal financed and funded as one portfolio. In 10 years, I’d like to see Cisneros with half a dozen luxury hotels in Latin America…To get as many projects done as I would like, we need partners…Finding partners for the D.R. project is most of my job right now

The Auberge concept with about a dozen residences is still in play, but that plan has been pushed back five years, according to Freeman. A third luxury hotel is also planned further down the road.
