Packing cubes are one of those incredibly smart ideas that sometimes pop up where someone figures out how to get people to pay them for something they don't need to begin with. Laughing all the way to the bank.

I didn't "need" to travel several million miles over the last 20 years but I did. And I found packing cubes helpful for organizing things in several ways. For instance, on TATL flights I typically keep one change of clothes in a separate cube. That way when I arrive at my location which is typically London, I go to the arrivals lounge and can pull out that cube and can change easily after taking a shower. That is also very helpful if I have to check my bag for some reason (learned this the hard way on a NRT-ORD-LHR trip when they made me check at the last minute at ORD) and I can pull out a cube with a complete change of clothes.
I prefer the benefit of the extra organization. Different people prefer different ways of doing things. That doesn't make them a "sucker" but makes them have different preferences.
