In a customer facing role, it is extremely unwise to make an ambiguous comment on first contact.
It doesn't matter if the agent is bored, hates their job, feels they're underpaid, put on blah blah blah.
It does not matter if some people like banter, others do not and they should not have to be on the wrong end of it.
The agent was responsible for the OP's discomfort, intended or not.
I note that some posters appear to be confusing politeness with PC behaviour, the two things are very different.
