Also check out the Bridge in HKG, which is Cathay's newest lounge. It does not have a separate first area, but I quite enjoyed the intimate design and the food. I would go to the Wing first, take in the amenities there and then head over to the Bridge if your flight departs from a gate near there.

I've taken the YVR-JFK flight numerous times and never experienced any of Flyingfox's concerns. The YVR based crews have always been quite professional and friendly.
