Exactly. Sounds like OP wants a window seat, and doesn't care if it's EC, preferred, or a regular seat. Even if it goes to the GA for random assignment at the gate, there's still a better chance of ending up in a window seat than if OP chooses a middle seat in advance.

I would also suggest OP set up a seat alert on ExpertFlyer, since it's free and can enable OP to resolve this in advance of the gate... especially starting 6 days before the flight when the Medallion upgrade windows start opening.

One word of warning to OP re: not having a seat assignment... if you don't have status and you don't have a seat assignment, you are at a higher risk of being involuntarily denied boarding if the flight is oversold. This is very unlikely, as volunteers are always sought first, but if there aren't enough volunteers you could get the boot. Although you would be compensated with a pile of cash in most cases, if you absolutely *have* to get to where you're going, you reduce your risk of a bump by having a seat assignment.
